The BIG Coalition has asked the Economic

South Africa's Constitution says: "Everyone has the right
to have access to ... social security, including, if they are
unable to support themselves and their dependents, appropriate
social assistance."
Yet roughly half of South Africa's people live in poverty.
And nearly half of all poor people live in households that have no
access to social security.
The Basic Income Grant Coalition was formed in mid-2001 to develop a common platform among advocates of a universal income support grant and to mobilise popular support for the introduction of the grant.
The Basic Income Grant Coalition calls for the introduction of a Basic Income Grant which would
- provide everyone with a minimum level of income,
- enable the nation's poorest households to better meet their basic needs,
- stimulate equitable economic development,
- promote family and community stability, and
- affirm and support the inherent dignity of all.
